Let me close by saying Ash Wednesday is one of the most intense days of the church year for me. I have so much personal history wrapped up in this day. It seems to be a time when I’ve known love and loss, new beginnings and dreams deferred. Like Advent and New Year’s Eve, Ash Wednesday conjures up for me longing and hope as I lean into the season of Lent. And year by year, Lent draws me into seeing the fullness of the brokenness and beauty in my life and the life of the world.
My prayer for you on this Ash Wednesday, is that in the very moment when your needs for healing and wholeness come fully into view, May the Spirit
rise up like tongues of fire that burn the palm leaves into ashes
wash over you like the renewing waters of baptism
shine on you like an eternal sun and warm your soul
And as your heart cries out for mercy, and pleads for justice, and longs for kindness, may God meet you in your cries, hear your pleas, see your longing and tenderly hold you there.
