  • Starting tomorrow morning - and for the coming week - I am teaching a course I dearly love “prayer and pastoral care“ to students at St. John’s School Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, MN.

  • Home after a quick trip to Birmingham for the @baptistwomen Baptist women in ministry meeting. I left a trail of #3MMM bookmarks and asked my friends to share with us what they are reading this summer… Here’s one of my answers. In addition to reading for the four classes I’m teaching 🤓🧐😎, I’ve been reading about Wilma Rudolph. I’ve had the book since middle school but I just came across it a few weeks ago. I love reading her story in her own words. She pulls no punches when it comes to the racist society she grew up in just a few miles from where I live now. I’m inspired by her on many levels.

  • Reentry.
After an intense week in Cuba, I’m happy to be home, to family, cats, my own bed, and familiar food. And also... everything I experienced on this learning adventure is still so present in my mind and body.
On the yoga mat this morning I noticed two things in particular. .
1) I am tired. Deep tired that comes with travel and opening oneself to so many people and new experiences. It will take some reflection and integration as well as physical rest to remedy this deep tired. .
2) I was more flexible than I expected after a week+ away from yoga. In Cuba I did walk each morning —down to the ocean — for 2 miles before breakfast. And some days I added weight-bearing reps. But this is a limited exercise routine for me, so I expected Hot Yoga to be a struggle this morning. My surprising extra flexibility I think comes from spending way fewer hours at a desk in front of a computer writing, attending video meetings, answering email, and doing administrative work. .
That is an important lesson. While computer work is essential for the kind of creative contributions I am trying to make in the world, one of the downsides is the impact on my physical flexibility. .
I am grateful for the gift of yoga for raising my self awareness about my health, flexibility, fitness and general state of well-being.

  • Cuba! We danced. We sang. We made new friends. We encouraged each other. We learned. We laughed. We cried. And we will be processing all that happened for a long time! @centralseminary #wliincuba #centralincuba
